Show Success

The Allegheny Alpacas stalls at an alpaca show.

Allegheny Alpacas has participated every year in alpaca shows since attending our first show in 2000. We normally participate in the Spring shows, including the PAOBA Breeder's Showcase, MaPACA Jubilee, AOBA National Show & Conference, as well as others. We've competed  in some of the largest and most competitive alpaca shows ever, including regional, national and world alpaca shows. And, we are proud to say that we've done quite well. Although showing your alpaca is not a requirement for the alpaca business, it is a great way to meet and get to know your fellow alpaca breeders. Shows are also a great place to see the resulting offspring of dams that have come to our farm to breed to our herd sires, and to see those alpacas born from animals we raised on our farm. The shows can provide an external opinion of the quality of the alpacas bred and raised at Allegheny Alpacas.

2012 Show Season. Our streak of showing alpacas each and every year since 2001 may come to an end this season. Balancing family needs and day-job tasks may prevent us from participating this year, but hopefully we will be able to break away and watch a show on at least a day trip (even without our alpacas). We are certain the Allegheny Alpacas bloodlines will be well represented at the spring shows, as we've heard from several of our friends who are showing them. We wish them luck at the shows. We look forward to seeing our friends and our herd relations at the shows, as well as making new acquaintances. We hope to see you at a spring show, even if we are only in the audience stand this year.

Allegheny Alpacas show helpers (Jack's dad and mom) finally get a break at a 2009 alpaca show.

2011 Show Season. The 2011 show season was a short one for us, with all of our kids activities and Jack working full time again. We participated in one show, the 2011 MaPACA Jubilee. Our show string included all home-grown alpacas again sired by our herdsires. We took 2 yearling males and 1 juvenile male for halter classes. Even with a short string, we had another strong showing, winning more banners/ribbons than alpacas that we showed. Specifically our 3 entries won 4 awards, including:

2010 Show Season. Our show season for spring, 2010 was another "banner" year of success. We assemble our home-grown show string line-up once again, including 2 juvenile boys (and to fill our stall for the first show only we also showed a juvenile female), as well as a handful of fleeces. Again, we participate in 2 shows that we have every year for almost a decade -- the 2010 PAOBA Breeder's Showcase and the 2010 MaPACA Jubilee -- plus we participated in the 2010 AOBA National Show. At these 3 shows, we earned 24 banners, ribbons and awards, including:

2010 MaPACA Jubilee HERDSIRE OF THE YEAR. We won one the most prestigious awards of our show career this year, when our Bred-and-Owned Herdsire, Allegheny Peruvian King Coal, won the 2010 MaPACA Jubilee Senior Suri Herdsire of the Year -- an award earned through a combination of points from his offspring showing successes at that show, as well as the amount of interest measured at the show in breeding to him. King Coal's offspring did exceptionally well at the show, winning a championship for one large farm and earning several take first place ribbons, plus he had ribbon winners in the fleece show, too.

Allegheny Alpacas show stall at the start of the 2009 World Alpaca Conference, before winning 2 Champion Banners, 3 Blue Ribbons and 2 Red Ribbons.

2009 Show Success. Our 10th year in the alpaca business proved to be another highly successful one. Our show string was 5-alpaca-strong for 2009. We saw friends and our herd relations at the shows again this year. We were proud again to have an alpaca in the 2009 AOBA National Show/World Alpaca Conference Auction. In addition, our herd sire sired another of that auction's entries. With 2 of 35 suris in the auction having bloodlines from our herd, we were honored. When you think about how the auctioneer has a choice from all over the country, from hundreds of entries and thousands of farms, we felt having 2 with our bloodlines was a compliment to our breeding program. We participated in the Maryland Alpaca Show, the MaPACA Jubilee, the PAOBA Breeder's Showcase, and the AOBA National Show & World Alpaca Conference. For the year, we earned 37 banners, ribbons and awards, including:

At the 2009 World Alpaca Conference in Cleveland, Ohio, our 3 fleece entries brought home 3 BLUE ribbons and 2 CHAMPION Banners. As this is the first WORLD alpaca show in the U.S.A., the competition was impressive, so we were very pleased with our small farm's successful placement.

Bud Reinhart, Jack's dad, wins a BLUE Ribbon with Allegheny Peruvian Brandi Locks at the 2008 PAOBA Breeder's Showcase.

2008 Show Success. Our show string was only 5 alpacas in 2008, but several of our friends who have alpacas from us and our herd sires' bloodlines showed, too; so it was extra exciting. Our friends did quite well, winning CHAMPIONSHIP BANNERS and BLUE ribbons in full fleece halter classes and fleece classes at major shows. We helped a few by showing their alpacas in the show ring, but we like to credit our friends with the success, as they had the eye to choose the breedings and select the alpacas from our herd for their herd. As proud as we are of our friends' success, we, too, had a impressive show season. We attended the Maryland Alpaca Show, the MaPACA Jubilee, and the PAOBA Breeder's Showcase in the spring show circuit. For the Fall shows we had alpacas at the Empire Extravaganza and the Maryland Alpaca Breeder's Association Show, and even attended the Carolina Classic in December. For the year, we earned almost 40 banners, ribbons and awards, including:

In addition to our strong show class winnings, we were very pleased to win the special awards with our dark fleeces. With dark brown/maroon fleeces we won JUDGE'S CHOICE, BEST HAND, and BEST LOCK. Our fawn fleece won BEST LUSTER. We feel these are really impressive considering our dark fleeces competed against all colors, including white and beige. We also helped our friends show and were able to win MULTIPLE CHAMPIONSHIP BANNERS as handlers for their alpacas.

Allegheny Peruvian Roberto Clemente, a handsome dark maroon junior herd sire, wins a BLUE Ribbon at the 2007 Michigan International Alpaca Fest.

2007 Show Success. We had a show string of 3 alpacas for the 2007 show season (because we sold most of our juveniles and yearlings). However, even with a shorter-than-usual string, we still brought home 14 ribbons from major shows. We had at least one alpaca attend the Maryland Alpaca Show, the Kentucky Classic, the MaPACA Jubilee, the AOBA National Show, the PAOBA Breeder's Showcase, and the Michigan International Alpaca Fest. Our 2007 winnings included:

Allegheny Peruvian Amber & Allegheny Peruvian King Coal win CHAMPION Banners at the 2006 Maryland Alpaca Show.

2006 Show Success. The 2006 show season was our busiest yet. We took at least 4 alpacas to each show and as many as 9 to one show. Again, we were very pleased with our results as every alpaca we showed won a ribbon. We took a total of 40 ribbons combined at the Maryland Alpaca Show, the MaPACA Jubilee, the AOBA National Show, the Buckeye Show, and the PAOBA Breeder's Showcase. Our 2006 winning highlights included:

Allegheny Peruvian King Coal wins his first TRUE BLACK CHAMPION Banner at just 8 months of age at the 2005 PAOBA Breeder's Showcase.

2005 Show Success. In 2005, every suri alpaca that we showed won a ribbon at each show. We took as few as 4 alpacas to each show and even took 8 to one show. We participated in the Kentucky Classic, the MaPACA Jubilee, the Buckeye Show, and the PAOBA Breeder's Showcase. (We did not attend the AOBA National Show as it was in Utah.) Out of 24 halter classes and 8 fleece classes that we entered, we were pleased to earn 1 CHAMPION Banner, 15 BLUE Ribbons and 4 RED (2nd Place) Ribbons. We were very pleased at our show success rate of almost one BLUE ribbon for every 2 entries.

2004 Show Success. The 2004 show season was exciting as we were beginning to see our herd sire's cria enter the show ring. We had another exceptional year, winning 13 BLUE Ribbons, 8 RED (2nd Place) and 7 third place ribbons. In addition, our herd sire Vivaldi won the "Best Suri Lock" award for his fleece. We participated in the Virginia Classic, the ABC Show, the MaPACA Jubilee, the PAOBA Breeder's Showcase, the AOBA National Show, and the SEPA Show..

2003 Show Success. The 2003 show season was exciting since it provided us with our first CHAMPION Banner. Allegheny Peruvian El Toro, who we owned the dam for and chose her suitor, won the CHAMPION Banner at the 2003 AOBA National Show against some of the largest and well known farms in the US. Every alpaca we showed won a ribbon, but El Toro's CHAMPION banner was the highlight to a successful show season.

Allegheny Peruvian El Toro wins the CHAMPION Ribbon at the AOBA National Show.

2002 Show Success. The 2002 show season was the first show that we entered offspring where we were the breeders (i.e. we not only owned the dam of the offspring, but we chose the herd sire to sire the offspring.). It was a strong year. Every alpaca we showed won a ribbon.

Jack's first ever attempt in the show ring occurred at the largest alpaca show to date and

resulted in a BLUE Ribbon - proof that showing really is about the alpaca (and not the handler).

2001 Show Success. After attending (without alpacas) a show in 2000 and a smaller show for a couple hours in the Spring of 2001, we decided to participate with our alpacas. Our first show where we brought alpacas was the 2001 MaPACA Jubilee, which after arriving, we learned was the largest alpaca show in the US at the time. There was no real pressure, as we were "newbies" to showing. We left happy, with every alpaca we showed winning a ribbon. And my first walk into the show ring produced our first BLUE Ribbon; one of many to come.
